Reading the list of superstars Sherwood
Ball has worked
with during his long music career is almost like reading the Music
Hall of Fame; Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Van Halen, Jackson Browne,
Alice Cooper, Bonnie Raitt, Stills & Nash, Jay Graydon, Steve
Lukather, Steve Morse, Albert Lee, Etta James, Three Dog Night
and many, many more.
Born in Arizona in an Air Force Base hospital where
his father played Bass Drum in the Air Force Band and raised in Southern
California. He started to play the guitar at age six against his
own wishes forced by his father. Sherwood wanted to play steel guitar
(like his father) and drums. It wasn’t til later when he was
nine years old that he started to make money playing in college bands
that he realized that his father had made a good choice. Especially
later when the Beatles became popular. He started singing at eleven
years old by practicing one song (House of the Rising Sun by the
Animals) over and over for one year in the garage with a Shure microphone
plugged into his guitar amp and a tape recorder. Finally, when the
tape started to sound good, he played the song for his other band
members (The Reaction – instrumental band). He then became
the
singer for the band.
Touring Singer/Guitarist/Songwriter
Sherwood came to Hollywood to do a solo record project produced by
Freebo. Freebo was able to pull in Yvonne Elliman and Bonnie Raitt
to sing duets for Sherwood’s project. At the same time, Sherwood
joined Freebo’s band, The Hollywood Rock ‘n Roll Revue
which included members of Little Feat, Bonnie Raitt’s band,
Sha Na Na and famous songwriters. While playing in that band, they
backed artists like Jackson Browne, Joe Walsh, Stephen Stills, The
Coasters, Del Shannon, Etta James, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen,
etc.
Sherwood’s brother, (bassist/guitarist) Sterling Ball, has
a band called Biff Baby’s Allstars. Sherwood has been the lead
singer/rhythm guitarist in the band and toured with guitar gods,
Steve Morse and Albert Lee to Germany several times, Japan several
times, England and Australia. He’s also had the privilege of
performing with Vinnie Moore, Blues Sarceno, Jay Graydon, and Steve
Lukather in this band. He was also asked to sing special gigs by
Edward Van Halen.
In 1993 Sherwood was asked by Jay Graydon to write
some songs for Jay’s upcoming CD, “Airplay for the Planet”.
Sherwood co-wrote three songs and sang lead vocals and backgrounds
on those songs, “Show Me The Magic”, “Holdin’ On
to Love”, and “One Way or Another”. Sherwood then
toured with The Jay Graydon Allstars in Japan and Scandinavia in
1994 and 1996. The songs, “Holdin’ On to Love” and “Show
Me The Magic” were the radio picks in Sweden.
He’s also written music for the tv shows,
General Hospital, Jake and the Fatman, etc. and movie themes such
as Cartel, Down the Drain, Primal Instinct, and scored the music
for his films.
Studio Singer
Later, as a studio singer, he played the “Mummy, Winged Bat,
Vampires” in Tim Burton’s "The Nightmare Before
Christmas", sang the theme to many tv shows including “Hangin’ with
Mr. Cooper”, “Mama’s House”,
etc. sang in movies such as Let it Ride, Wayne’s World, Always,
102 Dalmatians, etc.
Nowadays Sherwood both sings, plays guitar, a little bass and keyboards.
In CODE he delivers breathtaking vocals with his huge, dynamic voice.
He writes the lyrics for the CODE songs and together with Anders,
he also helps out producing of the music.
Actor
Sherwood is not only a talented musician and singer. He started at
a very young age as child actor. When he was nine years old he
saw the musical movie, Porgy and Bess with Sammy Davis Jr. and
sang “Summertime” for a year, driving his parents crazy.
Another reason they went crazy was everyday he asked for acting
lessons. Finally, Ernie said, “If
you earn the money to pay for the lessons, mom will drive you into Hollywood
each week.” He studied with Lurene Tuttle for three years finally getting
an agent and a part in the Hollywood movie "Follow me Boys" (also
staring a young Kurt Russell) and followed that up by appearing in several
TV-series. Sherwood went on acting auditions for 5 more years everyday after
school not getting one part. Finally, when Franco Zefferelli released, “Romeo
and Juliet”, Sherwood’s physical type became popular
and over the next two years, he acted in over 60 national commercials.
After many heartbreaks, theatrically, in Hollywood, he fired his
agents and manager and ran off to Theater college where he studied
light design, set design, sound editing, and acting in musicals.
Frustrated yet again because an actor in theater is usually very
poor and because he missed playing his guitar and singing, he decided
to go back into rock n’ roll.
Director
Lately he has directed and produced his first own 35mm feature length
movie, "Love.com". Sherwood has also written, directed
and produced several short films. He also edits, scores, mixes
and doe computer motion graphics. All his movies are written and
produced together with his wife, actress, producer and writer,
Celia Xavier. There latest film "Headrights" had its
premiere at the Red Fork Film Festival in Tulsa, Oklahoma on the
17th of November 2005.
Voice Actor
Sherwood has also been Toyota's voice in American commercials the
last 10 years. Other companies he's sung or been the voice for
are: McDonalds, WalMart, Razor, Coca Cola, Georgia Coffee, Atomic
Skiis, Japan Airlines, Suntory Beer, Asahi TV, every beer known
to man and just about every car company. |
